A data center proposal in Matthews, North Carolina, has been withdrawn.

A rezoning application for 'Project Accelerate,’ a data center which would be constructed on 123 acres of land along East John Street, was set to be considered on October 13.

But, according to a Facebook post made by Mayor John Higdon on October 7, developers East John Master Development and Matthews DC LLC had withdrawn their application.

A statement issued to WBTV by Crosland Southeast, a real estate development and investment firm speaking on behalf of Project Accelerate, said that this would "allow additional time to explore options.”

Local opposition to the proposal has been fierce, with residents citing concerns about power, property taxes, noise pollution, and the facility’s potential impact on the environment.

Matthews is a town located southeast of Charlotte, which is North Carolina’s most populous city and the state’s data center hotspot.
