Bitcoin mining company Phoenix Group has launched a new mining data center in Ethiopia.
Phoenix Group has announced that a new 6,250 sqm (672,744 sq ft), 30MW Bitcoin mining facility at the Bole Lemi Industrial Park in Addis Ababa has entered service in partnership with the nation’s state-owned utility Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).
Around 90 percent of Phoenix’s Ethiopian operations' power needs are sourced from the renewable energy produced by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Earlier this year, Abu Dhabi-listed crypto, blockchain, and digital asset infrastructure company Phoenix Group agreed to bring 52MW of mining capacity into Ethiopia, increasing the total volume the nation allows to 132MW, which would be rolled out in two phases.
The first phase was set to bring 20MW of capacity, delivered by 5,300 air-cooled mining units, with the second phase bringing in another 32MW using hydro-cooling, originally due by the end of Q2 2025. Once operational, the site’s total hash rate is expected to represent 2.4 EH/s.
"Phoenix Group has rapidly become a leading force among the top 10 global Bitcoin mining companies,” said Munaf Ali, CEO and co-founder of Phoenix Group. “A testament to our strategic foresight in securing prime locations with abundant, low-cost energy and our operational excellence driven by vertical integration and cutting-edge technology. The opportunities for future growth are immense, and we are committed to aggressively expanding our global footprint in key energy markets."
Agreements in Ethiopia have brought Phoenix’s global capacity to over 500MW across the five countries in which it operates.
"With 132MW now running on clean hydropower, we’re proud to set a new benchmark for sustainable mining in Africa and deliver large-scale operations in energy-rich regions," said Reza Nedjatian, CEO of Phoenix‘s mining, AI and data centers division.
According to recent Phoenix’s earnings reports, the company has mined 305 BTC, of which 195 were self-mined, implying a realized, proprietary hashrate of around 4.34EH/s. At the end of September it held 682 BTC and over 642,000 SOL tokens.
The company expects further expansions in Ethiopia as well as North America in its fourth quarter, with another 90MW to come online in 2026, bringing its self-mining hashrate to around 13EH/s in the first months of the new year.
