Pakistani telco Zong has opened a data center in Islamabad, the country’s capital.

The facility’s capacity and exact location were not provided.

The data center, dubbed the ‘Cloud Intelligent Computing Center,’ seems to be geared towards cloud workloads.

Although Pakistan does not have a prominent data center market – Data Center Map lists 22 facilities in the country – Islamabad is one of three hotspots alongside Lahore and Karachi.

Pakistani oil company Mari Energies announced in September that it was constructing its first data center in Islamabad with 5MW of capacity at completion.

Zong, which is owned by prominent Chinese telco China Mobile, stated on LinkedIn that the facility was delivered in alignment with the Digital Silk Road, the digital infrastructure component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

This initiative has seen China invest in data centers, 5G networks, fiber cables, and more.

Zong is Pakistan’s second-largest telco, and it is one of four operators that offer 4G in the country.
