Orange Egypt and Vodafone Egypt have launched their respective 5G mobile networks this week in the country.
Orange's launch comes after the telco secured a loan worth more than $80 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Banque Misr to finance the cost of its 5G license.
Orange secured its 5G license in October, at the same time as rival telcos Vodafone Egypt and e& Egypt. Telecom Egypt was awarded its 5G license earlier in 2024.
In total, the value of the licenses granted for operating 5G mobile networks to the four mobile network operators (MNOs) is approximately $675 million. The licenses last for 15 years.
Ahram Online reports that the launch in Egypt initially focuses on "high traffic areas," but services will expand nationwide as part of a phased rollout.
“The launch of 5G services is a genuine milestone in Egypt’s digital evolution. It highlights our ongoing commitment to providing customers with the fastest and most reliable technologies available," said Dr. Ayman Amiri, chief technology and information officer at Orange Egypt.
"At Orange Egypt, we believe this technology will bring meaningful improvements to people’s lives and drive growth across vital sectors that depend on advanced digital infrastructure."
Vodafone also announced the launch of its 5G network in the country this week.
The carrier said its network spans more than 2,000 sites from Cairo to Upper Egypt, across numerous governorates throughout the Republic.
Vodafone said it will substantially expand its 5G coverage areas over the coming weeks.
