Oracle is currently hiring for a number of roles supporting the ongoing buildout of its Abilene, Texas, data center campus.

That site will be the first to support The Stargate Project, a $500 billion effort to build AI data centers for OpenAI. With 10-20 data centers planned at the campus, it could become the largest cluster in the world.

Oracle is hiring for a senior manager of data center operations for the site, alongside three data center site leads, a senior data center commissioning engineer, two IT business implementation analysts, a physical security manager, and a couple of build delivery engineers.

The Oracle job site lists at least 35 open positions for data center technicians, alongside several more for night technicians.

All applicants must be willing to live within 50 miles of the site, with Oracle able to help with relocation.

Cryptominer-turned-AI firm Crusoe began building the first phase of a planned 1.2GW data center campus in Abilene last summer, in partnership with Lancium.

Oracle soon signed on to lease some of the site - with the company now planning to use all of it. In October, Crusoe joined a $3.4bn joint venture with alternative asset manager Blue Owl Capital and data center advisory and investment firm Primary Digital to help fund the campus.

At the time, as Microsoft was technically the exclusive cloud provider to OpenAI, Oracle was set to provide services to Azure, which would then be used by OpenAI. Microsoft is no longer OpenAI's only cloud provider.

With Abilene now set to be home to Stargate, the exact funding and management structure remains unclear. Stargate's backers claimed that they had $100bn to invest 'immediately,' but reports put the actual figure closer to $45bn. It is not known if a transfer of leases or assets will happen, which could count into the figure.

SoftBank has financial responsibility and OpenAI has operational responsibility of Stargate, but this data center appears to be run by Oracle, adding further complexity.

Earlier this week, DCD exclusively reported on OpenAI's own planned Stargate hires, including a data center sourcing manager and an infrastructure strategy manager. "Help craft the direction of the entire data center industry," the generative AI company claimed.
