OpenAI and SoftBank will both invest $19 billion into AI data center business Stargate.

The Information reports OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told colleagues about the funding on Wednesday.

This would give the ChatGPT developer a 40 percent stake in The Stargate Project, which was announced this week by President Donald Trump. OpenAI said that Stargate had $100 billion to invest immediately, with another $400bn over the next four years.

The two other known investors are Oracle and Abu Dhabi's MGX, with The Information reporting that they are expected to invest a combined $7bn. That would leave another $55bn for the first $100bn investment, as well as the following $400bn.

Much of that is expected to be raised in the form of debt financing, some of which could eventually be traded publicly. Rival AI business owner and White House official Elon Musk this week criticized the announcement, claiming that Stargate did not have the money pledged.

OpenAI itself has raised a total of around $20bn, some of which is in the form of cloud credits. The company is also thought to be running at a loss, so it will likely have to sell equity or take on debt to fund its Stargate investment.
