OpenAI is looking to build a gigawatt-scale data center in India.

As reported by Bloomberg and citing people familiar with the matter, the data center will have at least 1GW of IT capacity as is being developed as part of OpenAI's Stargate project.

Details about the location and construction timelines are not yet known.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is expected to officially announce the data center later this month, should his plans to visit India proceed.

OpenAI declined to comment to Bloomberg.

The Stargate project was launched at the start of this year, with OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX announcing they would spend $500 billion on AI infrastructure over the next four years. Initial projects were focused on the US - starting with a site in Abilene, Texas - but since expanded to projects outside the country under an "OpenAI for Countries" program, including in the UAE and Norway.

In June, it was reported that OpenAI’s chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, was touring the Asia Pacific to look at locations for Stargate data centers. Kwon was said to be visiting Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, and Singapore.
