OpenAI has held talks with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) about a potential Stargate data center project in India.

The Economic Times of India reports that the 'advanced talks' also include plans to co-develop agentic AI solutions for enterprises.

The discussion comes after the publication claims similar negotiations with Reliance Industries fell apart.

TCS has said that it wants to become the world's largest AI-led technology services company.

Tata operated data centers across India and Singapore through Tata Communications, but sold a majority stake in both countries to STT Telemedia’s STT GDC from 2017.

This October, TCS announced plans for a large-scale data center build-out across India.

CEO K Krithivasan said that the newly launched HyperVault venture would spend around $6-7 billion over the next five to seven years. In November, investment firm TPG said that it would back the 1GW venture.

Alongside its significant US buildout, OpenAI has plans for a number of Stargate projects across the globe.

The company is backing a data center in the UAE that could support up to 5GW. In Europe, Nscale and Aker are developing a Stargate Norway project with around 100,000 GPUs, while Nscale is also deploying a smaller 8k GPU Stargate development in the UK, potentially spread across multiple sites.

An Argentine data center has been proposed, and the company has signed an MoU with SK Telecom to develop an AI data center in the southwest region of South Korea. It has also discussed the possibility of a data center in Canada.
