OpenAI is hiring for an energy policy lead based in Washington, DC.

The role will primarily focus on working with federal and state governments on helping power the company's operations in the US, but also support a broader global policy strategy in partnership with local leads.

In a previously unreported job listing, OpenAI said that the hire would be "responsible for shaping OpenAI’s positions and advocacy efforts on a range of topics, including energy generation and consumption, renewable energy markets, grid reliability, interconnection and permitting, and infrastructure sustainability."

The role involves building and maintaining relationships with a stakeholders that include the DOE, FERC, and PUCs, as well as regional grid operators like ERCOT, utilities, advocates, and clean energy partners.

The company is looking for candidates with "10-15+ years of experience in energy policy, infrastructure, or sustainability roles, including within government, utilities, energy firms, or mission-driven organizations."

The position pays $280-325k, alongside equity.

OpenAI's Stargate joint venture plans to spend $500 billion on data centers in the US, alongside projects in other countries.

The project, which we profile in depth in the latest DCD magazine, is a mixture of cloud contracts, partnerships, and self-builds, with each requiring a different level of involvement from OpenAI when it comes to power.

If built, its larger campuses would consume 1-2GW, requiring substantial energy planning.
