O2 Telefónica has signed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to procure wind energy in Germany.
Under the 15-year deal, renewable energy provider Iberdrola will supply 3,000 GWh of green power to the telecoms firm from the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind project.
The agreement, which commences in 2025, will reportedly enable O2 Telefonica to power more than 8,000 of its 28,000 mobile phone stations via renewable energy.
Construction on Baltic Eagle began in 2022, with full commissioning set to be complete by the end of 2024. Located off the coast of Rügen Island in the Baltic Sea, it will feature 50 Vestas wind turbines.
Companies including Holcim, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, Amazon, and Stahl Holding Saar have signed PPAs with Iberdrola to procure part of the output from Baltic Eagle.
Last week, Vodafone signed a PPA to procure wind energy in Germany via RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind farm.
Iberdrola has agreed PPAs with companies including Amazon, Meta, and Vodafone in Europe and the US, which utilize power from its other facilities.
For its part, Telefónica has previously signed PPAs in Spain and Chile with Acconia, and in Brazil with Voltalia.
This month O2 Telefónica also said it has built a self-sufficient, off-grid cell tower in Germany. The mobile communications site in the Hessian town of Kirtorf relies on solar panels and a fuel cell for its power. Located in an area of agricultural and forestry land, getting power to the site would have been difficult.
