NTT Global Data Centers Japan (NTT GDCJ) and Tepco Power Grid have formed a joint venture (JV) to develop data centers in Japan.
The JV will develop data centers in the Inzai-Shiroi area of Greater Tokyo, chosen for its power availability and connectivity.
The first project will see 50MW of IT capacity developed in the area, commencing once the new company is officially established in Spring 2024 and expected to be delivered by the second half of 2026.
NTT GDC, the parent company of NTT GDCJ, has committed to investing around $12 billion over the next five years in expanding and upgrading its data center business globally.
According to Tepco's fourth comprehensive special business plan, the company is already involved in data center business projects in "several locations" and is aiming for a profit of 70 billion yen ($488m) from the data center businesses by fiscal year 2026.
NTT has more than 1.5GW of data center capacity globally across 20 countries across North America, Asia Pacific, EMEA, and India. In October 2023, the company launched a new data center in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, a few months after launching its hyperscale campus in Chennai, India.
