Network vendor Nokia has secured a deal with Macquarie-owned Altafiber to support the company's fiber network expansion across Ohio and in Hawaii, where the company operates as Hawaiian Telcom.

As part of the contract, Altafiber will deploy Nokia’s 25G PON, IP routing, and advanced optical network solutions.

Ohio-based Altafiber currently serves more than 300,000 customers, while its fiber has passed more than 1.1 million premises.

Nokia notes that its Lightspan 25G PON product can help Altafiber to quickly scale services, introduce differentiated offerings, and maximize its fiber infrastructure investments.

According to the vendor, the modular PON platform provides seamless support for 10G, 25G, and 50G PON on the same infrastructure, which allows Altafiber to optimize its network and gain the flexibility needed to address specific business cases or needs.

As for the IP routing, Nokia will provide its 7750 Service Routers (SR), along with its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI) to "strengthen the network's foundation," as the vendor states.

"We are pleased to partner with Nokia as we continue to expand our multi-gig PON fiber network into new Midwest territories and across Hawaii. This partnership ensures we can deliver unparalleled speed and reliability to support the growing needs of our customers," said Ron Beerman, chief network officer, Altafiber.

"With this deployment, Altafiber is redefining customer experience, driving operational efficiency, and paving the way for the gigabit broadband era—a triple win," added David Heard, president of network infrastructure, Nokia.

Hawaiian Telecom has ambitions to become the first fully fiber US state this year.

Altafiber previously raised $600 million to fund its fiber rollout across Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Hawaii back in 2023.

Previously operating under the name Cincinnati Bell, Altafiber was taken private by Macquarie in 2021. A Bloomberg report in late 2024 noted that Macquarie was reviewing a possible $5 billion sale of Altafiber.
