Nokia Technologies is Nokia's business unit and is responsible for managing and monetizing the company's intellectual property.

Hammarén, who joined Nokia in 2007, has been acting president of the unit since October 2024, when Jenni Lukander left the company.

During his time at the vendor, Hammarén has held a number of senior positions across the company's patent licensing business, including chief licensing officer of wireless technologies, VP, head of IoT licensing program; and head of patent licensing Greater China.

"I look forward to working with our external partners and our world-class team to maximize these strengths and build upon the successful completion of our smartphone renewals last year and the momentum we have established in our licensing growth areas,” said Hammarén.

Nokia confirmed that Hammarén will be based in Finland and will report to Pekka Lundmark, Nokia’s president and CEO.

"During a thorough process, Patrik has demonstrated he has the strategic vision, drive, and experience to take Nokia’s patent business forward into the next phase of its growth journey," added Lundmark.

Earlier this month, Nokia signed a multi-year patent licensing agreement with Samsung, that will enable the South Korean company to use Nokia's video technologies in its televisions. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the agreement will see Samsung pay royalties to Nokia.
