Nokia and NTT Data have partnered to deploy Private 5G across the city of Brownsville in Texas.
The city first selected NTT to deploy Private 5G wireless connectivity in September this year. NTT Data has now partnered with Nokia as part of their wider collaboration to advance Private 5G in key sectors such as airports and smart cities.
Brownsville will leverage Nokia’s 5G radio access network (RAN) and NTT’s globally available Private 5G Network-as-a-Service platform.
The companies said their collaboration addresses the growing need and demand for reliable and modern connectivity solutions for critical business and municipal operations and is already demonstrating success with key customers.
“As Brownsville continues to grow as a prominent tech hub, the deployment of a Private 5GG network is essential. This cutting-edge network will provide faster connectivity and foster the adoption of emerging technologies. By prioritizing Private 5G, we’re positioning Brownsville to stay ahead in technological innovation and economic progress,” said Jorge Cardenas, chief information officer at Brownsville.
Mark Atkinson, head of RAN at Nokia, added: “Nokia’s Private 5G RAN, combined with NTT Data’s technology services, creates the ideal platform for a wide range of use cases and we look forward to partnering on further innovations together.”
This marks the pair’s first North American deployment. Nokia and NTT have already collaborated to deliver Private 5G solutions for Cologne Bonn Airport and Fraport AG, Germany’s largest airport.
NTT Data provides business and technology services to customers around the world. The company was selected earlier this year to be the prime contractor for the FBI’s IT services.
Last month, Nokia announced a contract to support Viettel Group's 5G rollout in Vietnam and was selected by Kiwi-carrier Spark as its majority 5G RAN partner to expand 5G services in the country. The vendor also signed a three-year deal with Zain in Iraq to upgrade the carrier’s network.
