Australian national telecoms and network company, The National Broadband Network (NBN), has signed a six-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with AGL to prcoure energy from the Macarthur Wind Farm in Victoria.

NBN will purchase 90GWh annually from the 420MW wind project. Macarthur, which consists of 140 wind turbines, is located 16 kilometers (9.94 miles) east of Macarthur, between Hamilton and Warrnambool, in southwestern Victoria.

The wind farm, which has been operational since 2013, is the largest in the southern hemisphere and cost an estimated A$1 billion ($622 million) to construct.

"The NBN network is a significant consumer of electricity, and the commencement of the PPA for renewable electricity from the Macarthur Wind Farm is an important milestone for us in meeting our target of 100 percent renewable electricity purchases from December 2025,” Stephen Smith, executive general manager, at NBN, said.

NBN has signed several PPAs to power its operations. In 2022, it signed a 10-year PPA for 80GWh per year from the 75MW West Wyalong solar farm in New South Wales, Australia.

Following this, in November 2023, it signed a 10-year PPA facilitating the construction of the 120MW Munna Creek solar farm in south-east Queensland. Under the PPA terms, NBN will take 59GWh annually once the site is live. Operations at the farm are expected to commence in late 2025.

NBN is the first Australian telecommunications company and Australian Government Business Enterprise to join RE100, a global initiative comprising over 400 businesses committed to 100 percent renewable electricity.
