MTN Group has confirmed that Ferdi Moolman will replace Charles Molapisi as CEO and executive director of MTN South Africa.

In a regulatory filing, Africa's biggest telco noted that Moolman will take charge as part of a reshuffle, following a strategic review.

Moolman will take on the role after serving as group chief risk officer.

Molapisi is set to take up his previous role as group chief technology and information officer (CTIO) from November 1.

MTN noted that during Molapisi's tenure as CEO, he has "led MTN through a challenging period of high power outages and network resilience, maintaining the company's network leadership."

Molapisi has been CEO of MTN South Africa since January 2022. He previously led the company's Zambia unit from 2015 to 2018, and worked as CTIO for MTN Nigeria between 2012 to 2015, having joined MTN in 2009.

His replacement, Moolman, previously led MTN Nigeria from December 2015 to February 2021.

The telco also revealed that group chief financial officer Tsholofelo Molefe will expand her role to incorporate the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) portfolio.

Earlier this year, MTN confirmed it plans to retire its 3G network next year, to instead focus on 4G and 5G technologies.

Across Africa, MTN serves more than 297 million mobile customers, including close to 39 million in its home market, South Africa. The telco's largest market is in Nigeria, where it has close to 80 million mobile subscribers.
