MTC Namibia has announced the launch of commercial 5G services.

Earlier this week, the telco confirmed that 5G services are now available in Ongwediva, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and Windhoek.

The carrier plans to expand to more locations in the coming months, as part of an "aggressive deployment" strategy.

In doing so, the carrier has become the first telco to launch 5G services in Namibia.

“We are proud to make 5G available to the market. MTC remains committed to leading Namibia’s digital transformation through the provision of a reliable and latest network technology that facilitates access to information, critical services, and communication, thereby bridging the digital divide," said MTC’s chief technical and information officer, Monica Nehemia.

One of MTC's 5G partners includes Chinese vendor Huawei, with which it entered an agreement with last year.

During a spectrum auction in 2023, MTC secured spectrum in the 700 MHz and 800 MHz bands, with each license valid for ten years.

Founded in 1994, MTC boasts more than 2.5 million customers and claims to be the country's biggest mobile operator.

Rival domestic carrier Telecom Namibia has previously said it plans to commercially rollout 5G services in 2026.
