Japanese engineering and manufacturing conglomerate Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has formed a strategic partnership with Spanish electrical energy conversion firm Ingeteam to develop energy infrastructure solutions for the US data center sector.
The companies signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the partners in distributing, integrating, and jointly developing advanced energy infrastructure solutions.
According to the partners, the partnership will combine MHI's experience in integrated power, cooling, and energy management with Ingeteam's rotating electrical machines, power electronics, control and automation, and digital technologies to help data centers address power-quality and grid-integration challenges associated with AI workloads.
Ingeteam’s technology portfolio includes electrical generators, advanced power electronics architectures, battery energy storage systems, power quality and grid stability technologies, and EMS/SCADA control platforms.
The companies said the MoU aims to expand access to Ingeteam's power conversion solutions and related software, and to explore opportunities to integrate selected technologies into advanced energy infrastructure architectures and solutions developed by MHI Group for its customers.
They also said that they plan to evaluate further areas for potential future collaboration, including advanced medium-voltage distribution technologies, energy management systems, and other emerging solutions for high-density computing environments. These areas would be subject to further technical and commercial evaluation.
"The challenge is no longer just securing power. It is delivering high-quality, reliable power to support AI workloads," said Shin Gomi, senior general manager, Data Center & Energy Management Department at MHI. "Ingeteam's depth in power electronics and power conversion strengthens our ability to deliver complete, reliable solutions for our US data center customers developing AI data centers."
"This alliance lets Ingeteam bring our power electronics and grid expertise to US data centers alongside a partner with deep systems-engineering capability. Together, we can provide a bridge between the electric grid and next-generation AI infrastructure, enabling customers to scale computing capacity while maintaining reliability and efficiency," said Adolfo Rebollo, CEO, Ingeteam.
MHI is one of the largest gas turbine manufacturers in the world. It has seen its order book swell in recent years, as data center operators and the utilities serving them scramble to meet up huge power shortfalls. In May, the company announced an overhaul of its gas turbine production process to improve efficiency in gas turbine combined-cycle systems and reduce the growing order backlog. Orders for MHI’s energy system unit have climbed by approximately 40 percent over the past year to 3.6 trillion yen ($23 billion).
