The head of AI infrastructure at Microsoft has left the company.

Nidhi Chappell said that she was departing the company after six and a half years, but did not disclose where she planned to go next.

"My team is responsible for building the infrastructure that made ChatGPT possible," Chappell told DCD back in 2023. "So we work very closely with OpenAI, but we also work on all of our overall AI infrastructure."

In a post on LinkedIn announcing the departure, Chappell said: "What started as an ambitious idea grew into the world’s largest AI GPU fleet—supporting Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and some of the most exciting innovation happening anywhere in technology. It’s been the privilege of a lifetime to help build the infrastructure that’s redefining what’s possible."

Posting a picture of a branded jacket, she added: "This jacket captures the experience so well—it has been through data centers, war rooms, launches, milestones, and a whole lot of chaos and triumph. Chaos that felt like so much fun!"

The departure comes on the same day that Sean James, Microsoft's senior director of energy and data center research, said he was leaving for Nvidia.
