European data center operator Mediterra has acquired a facility on the Italian island of Sicily.

The company this week announced the acquisition of Open Hub Med, an operator of a carrier-neutral facility in Palermo. Terms were not shared, but the transaction is expected to close by the end of Q1 2026.

Open Hub Med operates a 2MW, 1,000 sqm (10,765 sq ft) data center facility in Carini near Palermo. Announced in 2015, the site was launched around 2017 by a consortium including Eolo, Equinix Italia, Fastweb, In-Site, Interoute, Italtel, MIX, Retelit, SuperNAP Italia, VueTel Italia, and XMED. The facility was expanded last year, and is reportedly expandable to 4MW and 4,000 sqm (43,055 sq ft).

Mediterra said it had secured access to additional space and power for a "major expansion" of the facility in the coming years.

“The acquisition of Open Hub Med is a milestone in our expansion strategy in Italy and Southern Europe,” said Emmanuel Becker, CEO of Mediterra DataCenters.

“Sicily is Italy’s fourth most populous region and serves as a natural bridge to emerging markets. Bringing high-quality premium infrastructure here means enabling the digital transformation of the public administration and local businesses, while simultaneously guaranteeing a privileged gateway for global players, to whom we can offer ultra-low latency and unparalleled resilience.”

Mediterra launched in 2024. The firm is backed by PEIF III, a fund managed by DWS Infrastructure, and led by former Equinix Italia MD and Data4 country manager Becker.

The company operates a 4MW, 6,000 sqm (64,585 sq ft) site in Rome, Italy, previously occupied by Cloud Europe. The company was acquired by Mediterra in 2024.

Mediterra also lists plans to develop facilities in Spain, France, and Portugal, though few details are available.

Mediterra owner DWS, a German asset management company, also owns UK operator Stellanor. DWS recently sold Dutch data center firm NorthC to Antin Infrastructure Partners.

Sparkle also operates a facility in Palermo, while local operators Siportal, Media on Cloud, Sielte, and Tnet operate facilities elsewhere on the island of Sicily.
