Canadian resource exploration company Max Power Mining has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with data center developer TerraVolt Energy, EcoTech Building Solutions, and Carbon Neutral Growth Fund to evaluate the use of natural hydrogen to power AI infrastructure in Canada.

The MoU will examine the potential integration of natural hydrogen production, on-site power generation, water management systems, cooling infrastructure, and modular data center development at its Lawson project in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The MoU follows recent technical work at the Lawson Natural Hydrogen Complex. The Lawson complex is Canada’s first confirmed subsurface natural hydrogen system. Max Power is currently advancing exploration at the complex, which spans 14.2 sq km (5.4 square miles) within a broader 28 sq km (10.8 sq mi) envelope.

"Lawson confirmed far more than just the presence of Natural Hydrogen. It confirmed the potential foundation for a new category of integrated energy and infrastructure development centered around clean, scalable baseload power generation," said Ran Narayanasamy of Max Power. "As artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure growth accelerate globally, pressure on power systems and cooling infrastructure continues to intensify. Our focus is on understanding how all facets of the Lawson system may contribute to future commercialization pathways through technical validation, infrastructure integration, and practical deployment strategy. This MoU is an important step in that direction."

Following the MoU, the companies will assess whether hydrogen production and brine water resources could support power generation and cooling systems for AI data centers and other energy-intensive facilities. The evaluation will also include hydrogen storage and handling systems, modular infrastructure designs, and potential pilot projects.

We believe Max Power's Lawson Natural Hydrogen system, together with associated produced brine waters, presents a compelling opportunity to evaluate an integrated model combining clean baseload power generation, advanced cooling infrastructure, and modular AI deployment directly at the source of energy production."

The parties said any future development would be subject to technical studies, regulatory approvals, financing, and definitive agreements. In addition, the partners stated they are also evaluating the project as part of an application to Canada's Sovereign AI Compute Infrastructure Program.

TerraVolt is a powered land and data center infrastructure developer, launched last July by CalEthos. The company was originally positioned as a geothermal energy producer, but has since pivoted to natural gas solutions. Last month, the firm signed a firm natural gas supply agreement to power a behind-the-meter onsite power plant at its master-planned data center campus in Southeast Idaho.
