Google and Intersect Power have commenced construction at the Meitner Energy Center, where the companies will colocate a data center alongside new energy generation in Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas.

The project will comprise a data center alongside more than a gigawatt of wind, solar, and battery storage systems. According to the companies, by colocating the assets, the data center will come online at the same time as the generation assets, ensuring that the data center's power demands are met, without requiring excess power from the grid.

The data center will use advanced air-cooling technology to limit water consumption to small-scale domestic uses, such as restrooms.

“Our newest investment in Gray County deepens our partnership with Texas — a state that continues to lead with innovation and vision,” said Andrew Hart, regional head of Data Center Public Affairs, Google. “We are excited to become a part of the community. More than just building a data center, our goal is to be a good neighbor, which starts on day one by investing in local priorities, protecting water and energy resources, and working with residents to build a strong future together.”

Further details on the size and construction timeline of the data center and energy center were not disclosed. DCD has reached out for further information. Reports on the project first surfaced in March, with reports suggesting that the companies were planning two projects in the Texas panhandle, one capable of supporting a 3GW campus and another that could host a 1GW campus.

Google and Intersect first partnered in 2024 to develop colocated renewable power and storage technologies with new data centers across the US. The companies announced their first joint project in November 2025, which will see the construction of a data center alongside Intersect's Quantum Clean Energy Project, a 640MW solar and 1.3GWh storage facility in Haskell County, Texas. The project is expected to commence operations sometime this month.

Following this announcement, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, announced in December the acquisition of Intersect in a deal reportedly worth $4.75 billion. The company closed the acquisition in March.

Intersect Power is a US-based clean energy company with a portfolio of 2.2GW of operating solar PV and 2.4GWh of battery storage in operation or construction – mostly in Texas and California.

Google has had a presence in Texas for a considerable period of time. It currently operates data center campuses in Midlothian and Red Oak in Ellis County, in addition to having new facilities under construction in Armstrong, Haskell, and Wilbarger Counties.

To fuel growth in the state, the company committed $40bn to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Texas through 2027.
