Bitcoin mining firm MARA has partnered with power management company TAE Power Solutions to develop a high-frequency, real-time responsive load management system to meet energy demands from the AI and HPC data center sector.

The companies argue that, due to the unpredictable loads associated with high-performance computing, there is a need for an ultra-responsive energy resource that can shield both data center equipment and the local utility grid.

To mitigate these issues of grid volatility, MARA aims to leverage TAE’s proprietary power management technology, D-Series Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which the company claims will have the capacity to deliver 10MW of clean energy storage.

The modular system offers a wide range of power levels, from 75kW to 1.25MW per unit, and can be scaled to multi-megawatt levels. The system is also agnostic to battery chemistry, allowing it to work with a range of battery types. It is a containerized solution, pre-fabricated in 10ft and 20ft ISO containers.

“By collaborating with TAE Power Solutions, we’ll have the ability to respond in real time to operational demands, reducing the impact of volatile HPC loads and reinforcing resiliency within high-tier data centers," said Fred Thiel, CEO of MARA.

According to TAE, the system uses advanced hardware, real-time control, and machine learning–driven algorithms to continuously monitor and balance battery temperature, state of charge, and state of health on a microsecond time scale.

The first prototypes of the system are scheduled for deployment late summer this year, with commercialization expected to commence in early 2026. Deployment locations were not disclosed. DCD has reached out for further information.

TAE Power Solutions is the power supply system originally developed by its parent company, TAE Technologies, for nuclear fusion energy research. According to the company, the storage system is expected to play an integral role in the company’s fusion process.

TAE has been backed by Google since 2015, with the partners collaborating on the advancement of fusion technology through the use of machine learning. In June, the company announced that it had raised more than $150 million in its latest funding round, with backing from Google and others.

MARA is one of the biggest Bitcoin miners in the US, predominantly utilizing stranded energy assets to power modular mining units. In April, the company fully energized a 25MW modular cryptomine data center powered by flared natural gas in Texas and North Dakota.

Last December, the company acquired an onshore wind farm with plans to develop and operate a Bitcoin mining operation on the site, powered behind-the-meter.
