A new management simulator game lets you play as a fiber developer in the UK.
Fibre Tycoon sees the player take on the role of an altnet in 2010, with the goal of expanding their reach across the country. Players will have to decide how much to borrow from the bank to fund trench digging, where to build, which homes to pass by, how much to spend on marketing, and more.
The game also offers a variety of different game modes, which can see players compete with other players, build fiber during the events of the pandemic, and try to connect fiber to remote locations in the country.
Fibre Tycoon draws on real events that happened in the UK telecoms space since 2010, including “the cabinet rollout, rural public funding, the regulator’s review, the pandemic and home working, the console launches of November 2020, record game patch days, the rate shock, the data center buildout, satellite arriving in 2022 and the copper switch off at the end of January 2027.
“The events are real. The effects on your company are invented.”
Fibre Tycoon also draws on statistics provided by Ofcom’s Connected Nations series, which is published annually and describes the state of fixed broadband and mobile networks in the UK.
The game was developed by Dr. Alex J. Martin-Smith, the founder of broadband price comparison site BroadbandSwitch.uk. It can be found here.
Martin-Smith said that he was inspired by Transport Tycoon, another management simulator game which sees players play as a transport company trying to beat out its rivals.
In March, Czechia-based developer Waseku released a data center simulator game called “Data Center” where a player must “build, cable, and grow a living data center.”
