The man who climbed a 321-foot radio tower in Washington DC last week jumped from the tower after spending more than 60 hours perched on the structure.

Reports confirmed that the man, not identified or named by police, jumped from the tower, located at American University's campus, around 5:45 am ET on Friday (June 13).

The matter is now a death investigation, DC police said.

Washington Post reported that the man was experiencing a mental health crisis and was pacing around the structure several times. He was around halfway up the 321-foot tower.

The man was first spotted climbing the tower just after 3pm on Tuesday (June 10). Since then, members of the police emergency response team have remained at the scene.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, some buildings on the south side of the university campus were evacuated or put under a shelter-in-place order on Tuesday night.

DC Police had been attempting to talk him down from the tower since the Tuesday afternoon, owned by radio station WAMU-FM.

At one point last week, the man had agreed to come down but then chose to remain.

The police have not commented on the man's identity or whether the man had eaten or slept since climbing the tower.
