Liberty Broadband Corporation has this week completed the spin-off of GCI Liberty from Liberty Broadband.
The divestment is part of Charter Communications' planned acquisition of Liberty. As part of that deal, Liberty agreed to divest its ownership of Alaskan communications provider GCI.
Following the spin-off, Liberty Broadband and GCI Liberty are now separate publicly traded companies.
Liberty previously acquired GCI in 2020 as part of a stock-for-stock merger.
Liberty Broadband, which is controlled by American businessman John Malone, owns a 26 percent stake in broadband and cable firm Charter Communications.
Founded in 1979 by Bob Walp and Ron Duncan, GCI currently serves more than 200 communities across Alaska.
"In connection with the previously announced definitive agreement by Charter and Cox Communications to combine their businesses, Liberty Broadband has agreed to accelerate the closing of the Merger to occur contemporaneously with the Combination," said Liberty in a statement.
As part of the spin-off, Liberty confirmed Marty E. Patterson has been appointed to the role of president and CEO of Liberty Broadband.
Patterson also serves as SVP of Liberty Media Corporation and co-head of corporate development, and has served on the board of directors of Charter Communications, Inc. since April 2025.
Following his appointment, John C. Malone has resigned as president and CEO of Liberty Broadband, but will remain Chairman of the boards of Liberty Broadband and GCI Liberty.
