A large data center and renewable energy project has been approved in Tremorfa near Cardiff, Wales.

First reported by The Planner, plans for the 16.42-hectare site include a 25-meter tall data center facility, spanning 50,400 sqm (540,500 sq ft) across eight stories.

Located at Rover Way, the site is also set to have a battery storage capacity of 1,000MW, making it one of the largest battery storage facilities in the world. The 828 battery units will be stored in shipping containers.

The location had previously been lined up for a biomass power plant and has served as a motocross track.

The Cardiff Council planning committee approved the plan on October 17.

The council heard from local authority planners that the proposed building site is surrounded by scientific and ecological sites.

Around 2,000 cubic meters of material will need to be removed and redistributed from the site, resulting in a 70 percent loss of habitat space.

No compensation has been offered in mitigation for the loss of land, however through a legal agreement with the developer, the council will gain £250,000 ($324,000).

The development is expected to create around 1,000 jobs during the construction periods and 200 once operational.

Operators such as Keppel and Vantage currently have facilities in the Cardiff area.
