A 300MW data center broke ground yesterday in Pohang, South Korea.

The campus, called the Gwangmeyong General Industrial Complex, will be located in the town of Ocheon, south of downtown Pohang. It will be built in two phases, with the first offering 40MW and the second offering 260MW. The first phase will span 100,000 sqm (1,076,390 sq ft).

Reports from local media say that the goal is to complete the first phase in H1 2027.

Around 2 trillion won ($1.35 billion) has been invested in the project so far, according to a report by KBS.

Construction is being handled by Hyundai Engineering and Construction, and the site is being developed with investment from South Korean investor NeoAI Cloud.

Details about potential end-users were not provided.

Pohang is a city on South Korea’s southeastern coast located in Gyeongsang Province. It is not a major data center hub.

SK ecoplant said in September 2023 that it was planning to build a new 120MW data center campus and landing station in the city, but the progress of the project is unclear.
