Japanese GPU cloud company Ubitus K.K. will build a data center in Maizuru City, located in the northern portion of Japan’s Kyoto Prefecture.

The facility, called the Maizuru City AI Data Center, will be built on a 2.3-hectare site in two phases, with construction expected to begin this year. A “major development” – likely the construction of the facility’s first phase – will be targeted for completion by 2027.

According to Ubitus, the facility will use Nvidia’s Blackwell GPU architecture, but its total estimated capacity is currently unknown.

Maizuru City is not a data center hotspot, and Data Center Map lists no facilities in the area. Most of Japan’s data centers are clustered around Tokyo and the city of Kyoto.

Launched in 2012, Ubitus specializes in cloud and AI services and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The company originally focused on cloud gaming solutions but pivoted to also focus on AI in 2024.

Ubitus currently operates two data centers in Japan, in Tokyo and Osaka. In October 2024, reports emerged that Ubitus was looking to build a data center near a nuclear power plant in Japan. CEO Wesley Kuo said that the company would be looking for an initial 2-3MW of power for the new data center, with the potential to scale up to 50MW.

Last year, the company also received funding from the University of Tokyo’s investment wing in order to expand its GPU cloud and data center business, but the terms of the deal, as well as the value of the investment, were not disclosed.
