India-based global IT services company Infosys has won a multi-year deal from German car maker Daimler to manage its infrastructure services and data centers.

The move will see more operations being run in India as Bangalore becomes the hub of the global network’s management.

The agreement calls for the IT services provider to take over the running of Daimler’s European data centers and optimize them using cloud technology.

In a statement, the agreement covers management of infrastructure services and data centers, providing e-collaboration and middleware services as well as overseeing database operations.

Infosys has already completed the takeover operation of the running of the car maker’s European data centers of the automobile maker.

This will be the foundation for further efficiencies, which involve optimizing data center operations with secure cloud technologies and running the service more cost effectively from Daimler's enterprise operations office in Bangalore, India.

The project will involve moving the backbone of the Daimler’s IT infrastructure from Germany to India to make it more cost effective, according to a statement from Infosys.

"Radically changing markets and customer demands are making manufacturers relook at their technology backbones to seek solutions that enable rapid response at manageable costs and without disruption," Ruchir Budhwar, Infosys’s associate VP and European head of automotive said.

The new cloud-based backbone will be more flexible, which will lead to less downtime, he said.

This will be an additional source of cost savings, on top of day to day operations.

Infosys and Daimler have a shared vision for managing day-to-day data center operations, which involves transformation first, then innovation, Budhwar said.

The agreement was signed in the second quarter of Infosys' financial year 2013-14.

The transition was completed and steady state operations started in first quarter of financial year 2014-15.

Financial details of the deal were not revealed.
