Indonesia’s Telin has launched its cable landing station (CLS) for the Bifrost subsea cable in Manado-Minahasa.
Manado is on the Minahasa Peninsula, the northernmost part of Sulawesi, an Indonesian island. The province faces the Celebes Sea and the Philippines to the north.
Telin, which was founded in 2007 as a subsidiary of Telkom Indonesia, broke ground on the CLS in October 2024.
It will be part of the 19,888km-long Bifrost Cable System, which connects Singapore to the western US through the Java and Celebes seas with branching lines extending to Guam, Mexico, and the Philippines. The cable's capacity is set to be 10.4Tbps.
Developed in partnership with Keppel, Amazon, Meta, and Telkom Indonesia, the cable, which was announced in 2021, was originally scheduled to be operational by Q2 2024 but has since been pushed back to the second half of 2025.
The cable’s CLS in Winema, Oregon, became operational in May of this year.
CEO of Telkom Group Honesti Basyir said: “The Manado-Minahasa Cable Landing Station marks a bold step in positioning Indonesia as a vital digital gateway for the Asia-Pacific.”
Bifrost will also connect to another CLS in Jakarta, which broke ground in June 2024.
Manado will also be home to the Indonesia Cable Express System 2, which intends to increase connectivity between the various Indonesian islands.
