Indian utility NTPC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CtrlS Datacenters to provide 2GW of renewable energy.
The agreement will see the utility’s renewable energy subsidiary NTPC Green Energy (NGEL) delivering power to Indian data center operator CtrlS.
It is unclear which one of CtrlS’ facilities will be supplied. The company currently operates data centers in Mumbai, Bangalore, Noida, and Hyderabad.
NGEL was conceived as part of a broader effort to help the state-owned NTPC produce 60GW of green energy by 2032. NTPC, as well as its joint ventures and subsidiaries, has a production capacity of 84GW, of which NGEL constituted around 6GW as of August 2025.
Government sources show that India’s total cumulative power generation capacity was 475GW as of March 2025. Around half of this capacity relies on coal.
Hyderabad-based CtrlS has been pushing to expand its data center operations in India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. At the end of 2023, the company announced plans to invest $2 billion over the next six years, expanding across Asia and the Middle East. To date, the company has more than 250MW of IT capacity and is also planning a 150MW campus in Thailand.
India is a growth market for data centers, with the majority of its facilities concentrated in major urban centers, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.
According to DC Byte’s April 2025 report on India’s data center market, the country’s live capacity only constituted 14 percent, or 1.2GW, of the total 8.9GW of supply. The remaining 86 percent is made up by projects that are under construction, committed, and in their early stages, with the latter category constituting 57 percent of the total supply.
The size of India’s development pipeline has led S&P Global to estimate that India’s data center power demand will grow almost five times by 2030, taking up 2.6 percent of the country’s total share of electricity in 2030, up from 0.8 percent in 2024.
In November 2024, a report published by JLL estimated that the country’s data center capacity would surge 66 percent by 2026. Hyperscalers have taken a clear interest in the region: Microsoft is set to launch a new cloud region in Hyderabad by 2026, and Google is looking to spend $15bn on data centers and digital infrastructure in the eastern state of Andhra Pradesh.
