The government of India's National Informatics Centre (NIC) is set to use Amazon Web Services' (AWS) on-premises Outposts offering to support a hybrid cloud infrastructure.

AWS India will work with Yotta Data Services, an Indian data center and digital transformation services provider, on the deployment, which is part of NIC's Meghraj 2.0 initiative.

NIC is a department under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in India, and offers nationwide ICT infrastructure services for the Central Government, State Governments, and other public bodies.

The deployment will see AWS Outposts hosted within NIC data centers, enabling sensitive workloads to remain within the physical building while accessing AWS' cloud capabilities.

AWS Outposts are rack and server-level offerings from AWS, enabling customers to bring AWS capabilities to their own data center or Edge location. Launched in 2018, the cloud giant unveiled a new generation in April 2025 that could support AWS' seventh-generation x86-powered Amazon EC2 instances, beginning with the C7i compute-optimized instances, M7i general-purpose instances, and R7i memory-optimized instances.

The Government of India will be able to access Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) through the deployment. By using a hybrid model, the applications will be able to scale up via AWS' cloud platform during peak demand, then synchronizing back to NIC's own infrastructure within hours.

Yotta will handle the actual deployment.

The specific data centers set to house AWS Outposts have not been specified. According to NIC's website, the department has data centers located at its headquarters in Pune, Hyderabad, and Bhubaneswar, and 37 small data centers at various state capitals.

Of the larger facilities, the first was launched in Hyderabad in 2008, followed by NDC Pune in 2010, NDC Delhi in 2011, and NDC Bhubaneshwar in 2018. The latter is "cloud-enabled" and spans some 40,000 sq ft (3,715 sqm). Further data centers are said to be planned in Bhopal and Assam, with a groundbreaking on the latter held in 2021.
