In-Q-Tel (IQT), a venture firm funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has invested in a Wyoming-based data center developer.
“I am excited to share that IQT, the not-for-profit strategic investor for the US national security community and America’s allies, has made a strategic investment into Prometheus Hyperscale,” Prometheus Hyperscale CEO Trenton Thornock announced on LinkedIn. “IQT's investment will help advance Prometheus Hyperscale’s efforts to develop data centers at the speed and scale needed to meet the demand for compute and to support America’s AI capabilities.”
Terms of the deal have not been shared. IQT investor Sara A. Jones will join the company’s board of directors.

Launched around 2020 and formally known as Wyoming Hyperscale Whitebox, Prometheus was relaunched in September 2024. The Wyoming-based company initially planned to develop a 120MW campus back in 2020. However, after its relaunch, plans were revised to 1GW with plans to target multiple sites, including Arizona and Colorado. It is also targeting a development outside Dallas, Texas.
Founded in 1999 by a former CEO of Lockheed Martin, In-Q-Tel invests in companies that serve US national security interests, with a focus on technologies that help intelligence agencies such as the CIA and FBI.
Other technology companies funded by In-Q-Tel include quantum computing firms D-Wave, IonQ, Infleqtion, Xanadu, and Diraq; liquid cooling firm JetCool; containerized data center company Armada; long-term storage company Cerabyte; storage firm NetApp; OT security firm Nozomi; and space data center operator Starcloud. The firm has also invested in a number of energy and battery startups.
