Icelandic IT services provider Skyrr has purchased one of the country’s most well known data centers, Thor Data Center, just outside Reykjavik.

Norwegian based Opera Software was Thor’s first customer when it opened in 2010.

The data center itself is connected internationally through the E-Farcie submarine cable.

Thor also gained a lot of attention for its early use of containers inside its data center, built by Spanish company AST.

Skyrr CEO Gestur G Gestsson said Skyrr has been looking to build or buy in Iceland for some time and that its purchase of Thor, which already has an amount of international attention, will help it expand its reach.

“Thor Data Center has actively been involved in the marketing of Iceland’s environmentally friendly options for data center companies,” Gestsson said.

“We expect that Thor Data Center will help bring in foreign currency and contribute to the overall development of the country’s economy.”

Thor Data Center was started by a group of Icelandic IT Professionals and entrepreneurs with Iceland JV funding.
