Google has acquired more land at its existing Finnish data center campus amid ongoing troubles at its new planned development site.
A new 50MW data center is being proposed in Western Finland by a Finnish real estate firm, as another local construction firm backs out of a project in the region.
Google buys more land in Hamina
Google has acquired more land in Hamina for potential expansion of its existing Finnish data center campus.
The city of Hamina last month announced that the search giant had purchased additional land for the “potential expansion of its data center operations to meet growing demand for its services.”
The company has acquired around 56 hectares for €10.7 million ($11.95bn).
“Our collaboration with Google, which began back in 2009, has continued exceptionally smoothly, and we are very happy to see our partnership deepening in Hamina,” said Hamina Mayor Ilari Soosalu.
Google has had a presence in Finland since it acquired a former paper mill in Hamina in 2009 and transformed it into a data center. The data center is cooled with seawater, and has been upgraded numerous times in the interim years. In 2022, the company purchased 50 acres of adjacent land to accommodate further expansion.
The company also owns land in Kajaani and Muhos, and in Vaala. Google recently committed to investing €13 billion ($15.13bn) in digital infrastructure in Finland across 2027 and 2028.
The land sale comes at a difficult time for Google in Finland. The firm cleared some 250,000 trees at its Muhos site without the correct permit – though the company says it was done in accordance with its permits – and works were recently suspended at the site. A criminal investigation has since been launched by local police.
Tekova eyes data center in Perho
Tekova Corporation this month announced it has reserved around 41,000 sqm (441,320 sq ft) of land in the Perho municipality as part of plans to develop a 50MW data center.
Perho is a municipality of Finland located in the province of Western Finland in the Central Ostrobothnia region.
The facility could total two-stories, and a building permit application was submitted last week.
Construction of the project can start in 2027 and be completed in 2029.
Founded in 2018, Tekova is a Finnish real estate firm that specializes in the construction of commercial, office, logistics, production, and sports facilities, as well as data centers.
The firm is developing a 20,000 sqm (215,278 sq ft) data center expansion for Nebius in Mäntsälä.
SRV backs out of project in Eura
Construction company SRV Rakennus is abandoning the plot reservation for its planned data center in Kauttua, Eura.
First reported by Satakunnan Kansa, the company notified the municipality of Eura of the matter, according to an upcoming municipal board agenda.
Eura is a municipality located in the Satakunta region of Western Finland.
SRV planned to build a 30–40MW data center on a five-to-ten-hectare plot in the Tapola area of Kauttua. The company secured the plot from the municipality in May. The reason for the withdrawal is unclear.
SRV is the construction partner for CSC’s latest Lumi data center project in Kajaani and DayOne’s facility in Lahti.
