A gigawatt-scale data center campus is being proposed in Kansas.

Announced this month, the Flint Hills Digital Campus, near Emporia in Lyon County, Kansas, could total 1,000 acres within Emporia’s Industrial Park IV. Emporia is some 100 miles southwest of Kansas City.

The campus would include a “combination of dedicated grid infrastructure and on-site generation,” according to a dedicated project website, though full details haven’t been provided.

The City of Emporia is reviewing a request by Kanza Park Place, LLC to establish a Digital Infrastructure Overlay District (DI-O) and related annexation, zoning requests, and policy proposals.

The project is being proposed by local landowner Gary Pinkston alongside Kanza Park.

“The Flint Hills Digital Campus represents an opportunity to address some of those challenges while positioning this region for the future,” he says in an open letter on the project website.

“The project has the potential to attract substantial private investment, support thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent jobs, create opportunities for local businesses, and significantly expand the county's tax base.”

According to local press, discussions around the project have been ongoing since last year.

“The Flint Hills Digital Campus represents an opportunity to engage the community in discussions about the future of economic development, technology infrastructure, workforce growth, and long-term regional competitiveness,” said Garrett Nordstrom, Kanza Park Place LLC.

“We welcome public engagement throughout the planning process and look forward to continuing conversations with residents, businesses, local governments, and regional partners.”
