A former telephone exchange in Scotland is set to be demolished and replaced with a holiday home.

As reported by the Courier, Terri Welsh Architectural Design, on behalf of The Wild Sleep, has filed for planning permission to demolish a former telephone exchange and build a holiday home with Stirling Council.

Set on a 125 sqm (1,345 sq ft) plot, the Ardeonaig Telephone Exchange near Killin along Rob Roy Way is a small single-story facility. The developer aims to construct a timber-frame holiday hut.

“The proposals are for a new tourist facility with a new building to replace the existing derelict telephone exchange. The proposals will benefit the local economy by bringing tourists to the area that may use local facilities,” the application states. “The existing building has essentially been empty since 1975, is not fit for any purpose and is not suitable for conversion in terms of building standards.”

The application notes a conversion of the existing building was considered but deemed not possible.

“The existing building dimensions are 2.3m x 8.5m internally and insulating would drastically reduce the width of the interior,” the application said. “Conversion would also mean parking spaces would be required which is not possible on the site.”

According to local press, the former telephone exchange overlooking Loch Tay was put up for auction with a guide price of just under £50,000 in April.
