FirstLight will provide fiber infrastructure for Green 4 Maine, a former Air Force Base-turned data center park in Maine, US.

The American fiber provider already operates a network at the former Loring Air Force Base. Specific details were not provided about strand counts or bandwidth capacity.

A statement issued by FirstLight states that its network is physically diverse, “low latency, [and] high-capacity.”

The company’s map of its own fiber network shows that the majority of routes in Maine are most densely clustered around the cities of Portland and Brunswick. The former Air Force Base is located in Aroostook County, which is in Maine’s northernmost corner and borders Canada.

The base was built in 1947 and closed in 1994. It was then converted into the Loring Commerce Center business park.

Just last week, Green 4 Maine, the development company behind the data center park project, announced that liquid-cooled server provider LiquidCool Data Center had agreed to build a 5-6MW data center on a 115,000 sq ft (10,684 sqm) land parcel at the site.

Green 4 Maine co-founder Scott Hinkel also said that an unnamed Silicon Valley-based company was also interested in developing a data center at the site.

The property currently has access to 50MW of power sourced from hydropower generation in New Brunswick, an eastern Canadian province that borders Aroostook County.

According to its website, FirstLight operates a 25,000-route-mile fiber network across six states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. It offers services from 14 data centers across its footprint, with locations in Albany, Boston, Burlington, and Manchester.

The firm was founded as Tech Valley Communications in 1999 before being renamed to FirstLight in 2013. It was then acquired by investment firm Antin Infrastructure Partners in 2018.
