A data center will be built at a former US Air Force base in Aroostook County, Maine.

Loring LiquidCool Data Center LLC, affiliated iwth liquid-cooled server provider LiquidCool Data Center, will develop a 5-6MW facility on a 115,000 sq ft (10,684 sqm) land parcel at the former Loring Air Force Base.

Located in Aroostook County, which is in Maine’s northernmost corner and borders Canada, the air base was first built back in 1947 and closed in 1994. It was then converted into the Loring Commerce Centre business park.

The company signed the lease with Green 4 Maine LLC, a development company that owns a substantial portion of the former Air Force Base.

According to Green 4 Maine’s website, its mission is to “breathe life and job creation back into the former Loring Air Force Base, surrounding communities and northern Maine.”

The facility will be built at a former warehouse dubbed building No.7230.

Green 4 Maine co-founder Scott Hinkel told The County that this would be the first in a campus of data centers, stating that the company had “three or four buildings now that are perfect for data centers.”

According to Hinkel, an unnamed Silicon Valley-based company looking to operate a data center visited the former Air Force Base last week.

The co-founder added that the property now has access to 50MW of power sourced from hydropower generation in New Brunswick, an eastern Canadian province that borders Aroostook County.

The property is already home to AI and quantum computing startup Eternal Mind Inc., which opened its facilities in mid-2023.

Maine has a relatively small data center market, with Data Center Map recording eight operational facilities across four operators.
