A telephone exchange in Scotland suffered a fire over the weekend.

First reported by ISPreview, some services at the Strathaven Telephone Exchange in South Lanarkshire were disrupted after a fire on Saturday (January 24).

Approximately 1,500 customers on BT-owned Openreach’s local network are understood to have been impacted. No injuries were reported.

Citing an industry briefing, ISPreview said the building has suffered “significant damage.”

The cause of the fire isn’t clear at this point, but an investigation is underway. Early indications suggest third-party involvement rather than faulty equipment, but details are unclear.

An Openreach spokesperson told ISPreview: “We’re aware of a fire at our site in the early hours of Saturday morning and our teams continue to assess the damage and making the area safe. We’re doing everything we can to minimise the impact on people who use our phone and broadband services. Engineers are only able to begin work as soon as it’s safe, and we’ll provide further updates as soon as we’re able.”

Updates on UK ISP Freeola’s status page noted some of its services were impacted due to a fire in the Strathaven site. It said the fire had been extinguished by 8:50am.

It was one of two data center fires in the UK over the weekend, with Global Switch suffering a small fire in a battery room at its London facility.
