Equinix has signed a 15-year virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with Eneos Renewable Energy Corp for 121MW of solar power.

The deal, which is the company’s second within the Japanese market, will see the colo provider source power from the 121MW Sanda Mega Solar Power Plant in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Located on the site of a former golf course, the project reached operational status in 2024 and was developed by Pacifico Energy and constructed by Shizen Energy.

According to Equnix, the deal will support its efforts in covering its data center power demand in the country with 100 percent renewable energy.

The deal is the largest single-unit vPPA signed by a data center provider in Japan, reflecting the growing interest from data center companies within the country.

Eneos has a growing portfolio of renewable energy assets across Japan, with approximately 1.25GW of operating capacity. The company is targeting a cumulative total of 2GW of renewable capacity, including 14 under-development wind projects. The company was formed in 2021, following the acquisition of Japan Renewable Energy.

Equinix signed its first PPA in Japan last year, inking a 20-year deal with Trinasolar to support the construction of the 30MW Yufutsu Abira Project in Hokkaido.

Equinix has a growing presence in the Japanese market, totaling 14 facilities.

In June 2024, the company launched its fourth data center in the country, in the city of Osaka. Operating under the company's xScale brand, which is aimed at hyperscale tenants, OS4x has a total of 14.4MW of IT power across 4,925 sqm (53,025 sq ft) of data center space.

In addition to the OS4x data center, Equinix also has two xScale data centers in Tokyo, TY12x and TY13x, and another one in Osaka, OS2x.
