Canadian lithium-ion battery manufacturer Electrovaya is set to participate in a US Department of Energy (DOE) funded project, in which the firm will test the feasibility of integrating battery energy storage systems (BESS) in a data center environment.

The $5 million funding package was awarded by the DOE under its Critical Facility Energy Resilience (CiFER) program, and will support the company in the design and deployment of a 1.2MWh BESS. The BESS unit will be deployed at Binghamton University's Center for Energy-Smart Electronic Systems (ES2) and integrated into a data center test environment.

Electrovaya will supply its Infinity BESS as part of the project, which aims to demonstrate whether the system can support peak shaving, backup power, and load management in a data center environment.

The University of Binghamton is located in Binghamton, New York. The company claims that the demonstration project will be designed as a replicable model for broader deployment across data centers and other high-demand applications.

Electrovaya, based in Toronto, Canada, is a lithium-ion battery developer focused on industrial, robotics, defense, and energy storage applications. The company’s Infinity battery energy storage systems are a modular system delivered within a 20-foot container and explicitly target grid, industrial, and data‑center support applications.

The company is currently expanding its manufacturing base, with a planned gigafactory in Jamestown, New York. It also operates additional R&D and engineering sites in Canada.
