Digital Realty is developing a new cable landing station (CLS) in California.
The company last week announced plans to construct a new CLS at its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles.
The project is expected to begin supporting cables in 2028; however, the company hasn’t said how many cables the CLS would be able to host.
“This development reflects our continued focus on expanding Digital Realty’s role in supporting global connectivity,” said Andy Power, Digital Realty president and CEO. “By bringing together subsea landing infrastructure with our existing interconnection and data center platform, we are strengthening the intercontinental connectivity available across our Los Angeles campus and providing our customers with a more seamless and scalable environment for connecting across regions.”
Located at 2260 East El Segundo Boulevard in El Segundo and launched back in 2005, the two-story LAX12 totals 129,000 sq ft (12,000 sqm) and offers around 7MW of capacity. The site was developed by 365 Main and acquired by Digital in 2010. Digital’s LAX11 facility is located nearby.
The project will be undertaken in partnership with Assured Communications, a specialist in subsea infrastructure design and delivery.
“Assured Communications is supporting the design, engineering and construction of the project, drawing on its experience in subsea cable systems and landing infrastructure development. Projects like this are reshaping how global infrastructure is deployed and connected. We’re excited to help bring a new subsea cable landing station to Los Angeles to further strengthen connectivity between Asia Pacific and North America,” said Joel Ogren, founder and CEO of Assured Communications.
LA is the landing point for multiple current and planned subsea cables connecting the US to Asia, Australia, and South America.
Digital operates four facilities across Los Angeles, and last year acquired a 5.4-acre site at 4400 Pacific Blvd in Vernon for future development.
