Digital Realty has broken ground on a new data center in Zurich, Switzerland.

The colo giant this week announced the start of construction on a new data center in Glattbrugg.

The facility – ZUR4 – will provide 15MW of IT capacity across approximately 6,300 sqm (67,810 sq ft) of space. It is due to go live in 2028.

Announced in 2023, the new data center will expand Digital’s existing campus, which hosts ZUR1, ZUR2, and ZUR3.

Digital said ZUR4 will support high-density deployments and AI workloads via “state-of-the-art” cooling systems.

Yves Zischek, managing director of Digital Realty in Austria and Switzerland, said: “With ZUR4 and the continued expansion of our campus in Glattbrugg, we are creating a future-proof ecosystem that connects more than 200 customers on-site and more than 6,000 customers worldwide.”

Digital’s three live Swiss data centers total around 25,000 sqm (269,100 sq ft) of colocation space and some 45MW of capacity. In operation since 2000 and upgraded several times, ZUR1 offers 5MW across 7,400 sqm (79,800 sq ft). Construction on ZUR2 began in 2019 and launched around 2020.

Digital (via Interxion) announced plans for ZUR3 in 2020; the first of three phases was set to launch in mid-2022 and offer 2,900 sqm (31,215 sq ft) of space. Now live, at full build-out, ZUR3 will span 11,000 sqm (118,500 sq ft) and 24MW of capacity.
