A data center proposal in Allen Park, Michigan, has been postponed following calls for greater scrutiny.

The proposal, which calls for the construction of a 26MW data center at 7500 Enterprise, was postponed by the City of Allen Park’s Planning Commission at a meeting last Thursday, according to a report by Planet Detroit.

Like many other projects across the US, the data center proposal has been met with increasingly organized and fierce opposition.

Concerns have been raised about tax subsidies, the potential rise in utility costs, and procedural issues.

A petition posted to change.org, titled ‘Rejection of AI data centers in Allen Park, MI’, has received 634 signatures at the time of writing, and the Allen Park data center proposal has attracted considerable attention in a public Facebook group titled Michigan Citizens Against Data Centers.

As per a site description submitted by applicant Solstice Data, the facility is set to be two stories high, with its data hall offering a total floor area of around 52,898 sq ft (4,900 sqm).

According to Solstice Data’s website, the company specialises in AI data centers. It claims that it has over 22 sites currently active or in progress, as well as a 1GW power pipeline across four continents. Around 800MW of this is claimed to be located in the US.

Allen Park is located to the southwest of Detroit, the most populous city in Michigan. The majority of the state’s data centers are clustered around Detroit.
