Dallas-based CyrusOne is planning a $150 million data center development in New Albany, Ohio.

The company will spend $100m on building the data center, and $50m on acquiring the land for the facility, reports Columbus Business First.

The site in question is at 12181 Jug St, though details about the project have not yet been shared.

CyrusOne was awarded a 10-year 75 percent data center sales tax exemption valued at $5.4m by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority on April 1. This will apply to sales and use taxes associated with data center equipment purchases.

CyrusOne is required to maintain operations at the site until the end of that exemption term.

In addition to the sales tax, the property is within a "community reinvestment area" meaning that it benefits from a maximum 15-year 100 percent real property tax abatement if an agreement is made between the city and CyrusOne.

CyrusOne already operates multiple data centers in Ohio in the Cincinnati area. In total, the company operates 50 facilities globally, including in five European countries and Japan.

Several companies are looking to develop or already have data centers in the New Albany area, including hyperscalers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta. Colocation providers including QTS, Edged Energy, and Aligned Data Centers are also working on data center projects nearby.

A DC Byte report recently identified New Albany - a suburb of Columbus - as the "data center capital of the midwest."
