AI-focused GPU-cloud company CoreWeave will use DDN's ExaScaler storage solution for a test installation.

In September, the company partnered with Vast Data for a platform designed for workloads including generative AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and visual effects workloads (VFX) using Vast Data's all-flash storage solution.

That partnership is broader, and runs across multiple CoreWeave data centers. The company expects to complete its roll-out across its facility portfolio by early next year.

DDN is a provider of data storage and management solutions at scale, with a particular focus on AI and high-performance computing workloads. The ExaScaler storage solution is designed to be a fast and efficient storage solution for accelerated computing and AI environments.

The CoreWeave and DDN partnership involves just one custom installation.

The storage solution has also been used in Nvidia DGX SuperPod deployments and Nvidia's own Selene and Cambridge-1 supercomputing AI systems.

Earlier this month, CoreWeave revealed it would also be partnering with Backblaze, a cloud storage/computing specialist as a customer data store. Backblaze bases its storage on pods of disk drives using its own design of storage enclosures and can provide a long-term cloud storage solution. As of August 2023, the company had used more than 241,000 disk drives.

CoreWeave was previously a crypto-mining company before pivoting ahead of the generative AI boom. In August 2023, the company raised $2.3bn in debt financing to expand its GPU cloud platform, with funding led by Magnetar Capital, and Blackstone Tactical Opportunities, Coatue, DigitalBridge Credit, BlackRock, PIMCO, and Carlyle also taking part.

Earlier this month, CoreWeave revealed that it would be leasing data center space in Flexential facilities in Georgia and Oregon to host its GPU-cloud offering.
