Cold Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has launched a new 45MW data center in Osaka, Japan. The company is also planning a new 10-building, 120MW campus in Navi Mumbai, India.
Colt opens data center in Osaka
First announced in 2021, Colt this week confirmed the opening of a new 45MW facility in the Keihanna area of Osaka. The company said 75 percent of the 42,000 sqm (452,000 sq ft) data center is already committed.
Niclas Sanfridsson, CEO of Colt DCS, said: “The launch of Osaka Keihanna represents a major advancement in our journey to addressing the needs of customers for a robust and scalable solution rooted in operational excellence, sustainability, and exceptional customer service.”
In July 2021, Japanese conglomerate Mitsui and investment firm Fidelity formed a joint venture to build hyperscale data centers in Japan that would be operated by Fidelity-owned Colt. Colt then announced plans for the Keinhanna facility in August of that year.
The company currently operates one other data center in Osaka in the Kita-ku area. It also operates five facilities in Tokyo.
Ellen Hall, Fidelity’s head of Direct Real Estate, said: “We are excited about the official launch of Osaka Keihanna. This is the first development under Fidelity’s joint venture with Mitsui and validates our belief that having local partners in Mitsui and Colt DCS, with long track records in the region, is key to success. We look forward to replicating that success with the additional sites currently under development.”
Takashi Nakai, general manager of the financial business division of Mitsui & Co, added: “Following the announcement of our joint venture with Fidelity we have been working closely with Colt DCS in every aspect of the delivery of this new facility in Osaka Keihanna. With the launch of the new Osaka Keihanna facility, we are confident the capacity we are delivering with this data center will satisfy both the immediate and future capacity requirements of our customers.”
Colt expanding into Mumbai
Colt is also planning to expand into India.
According to a recent update on the company’s website and a sponsored article on Capacity published this week, Colt is developing a 10-building campus in Navi Mumbai.
The site will total 40 data halls and 40,000 sqm of data center white space across a 62,000 sqm site. It is set to open in Q2 2023.
“The location’s total capacity will be 120MW, with 18MW available in phase one – 75 percent of which has already been sold,” the company said.
Colt also has seven facilities across Europe; three in London, UK; two in Frankfurt, Germany; and one each in Paris, France, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
In January 2022 the company said it had acquired ten new parcels of land across Europe and APAC for new data center developments, including in Japan, but didn’t provide details.
