Local officials outside Detroit, Michigan, have denied a data center developer’s request to lift a moratorium on new developments.

Wixom City Council last week rejected an application to end the city's data center moratorium in a unanimous vote.

Wixom Industrial One and Sansone Group are hoping to develop a three-building facility on a 55-acre site at 30625 S. Wixom Road. Each building would be more than 200,000 square feet (18,580 sqm), for a total of more than 519,000 sq ft (48,216 sqm).

A northwestern suburb of Detroit, Wixom is a city in Oakland County. It has had a data center moratorium in place since March 2026. The six-month moratorium remains in effect until August.

Local press reports that the council called the request “unreasonable as it relates to the potential health, safety, and welfare impacts in the city.”

During the meeting, project developer Dennis Griffin said data centers were being treated “very, very unfairly.”

The council also agreed to postpone voting on the ordinance adding rules for data center developments until another meeting later this month.

The 55-acre Wixom Road site, known as Midwinds Industrial in some sales brochures, is currently vacant land zoned M-1 light industrial. The land, owned by Wixom Industrial One LLC, is located near a DTE transmission line and has natural gas available.

Sansone Group is a Missouri-based commercial real estate firm specializing in industrial, retail, and multi-family projects. It has previously acquired a data center in Silver Spring, Maryland.
